Economic calendar: Some central bankers on the agenda

  • NY Empire State index to show sentiment among manufacturers in the region
  • A few speeches of central bankers in the spotlight as well

1:30 pm GMT - NY Empire State for April: Over the course of the past months we saw a notable deterioration in regional manufacturing indices in the United States. In March the trend broadly continued except for Philadelphia where a massive improvement occurred. Looking forward, one may hope that sentiment among US manufacturers has a chance to see a jump taking into account upbeat revelations flowing from US-Sino trade negotiations, robust PMIs from China in March as well as signs of increased credit activity in the world’s second largest economy. If this is the case, the consensus before today’s reading calling for 8 (up from 3.7 points seen in March) could be beaten.

2:00 pm GMT - Canadian existing home sales for March: the consensus points to a 2% MoM increase, up from a 9.1% MoM decline in the prior month.

Central bank speakers:

  • 5:00 pm GMT - BoE’s Haskel

  • 5:30 pm GMT - ECB’s Villeroy

  • 6:00 pm GMT - Fed’s Evans

  • 1:00 am GMT (Tuesday) - Fed’s Rosengren
